4. Fresh vegetables and lentil curry - Vegetarian Restaurants in
Switzerland

Hungry on vacation, but don't eat meat? Vegetarians and people wose
pleasure of eating meat is temporarily spoilt because of BSE or foot &
mouth disease are often at a loss where to eat  away from home. To est
well and meatless in Switzerland can add to the vacation pleasure -
therefore, here are a few noteworthy suggestions:
In Zurich, Europe's oldest vegetarian restaurant, the Hiltl (Sihlstraase
28) is right off the Bahnhofstrasse and enjoys cult status among
vegetarians. Give yourself time to choose
from the extensive menu offering Asian specialties, delicious salads and
exotic fruit juices.

„Menuetto counts among the best contemporary vegetarian restaurants of
Europe" raves Gault Millau about the Restaurant Menuetto in
Berne(Herrengasse 22) awarding its kitchen  14 points. Also quite popular:
the Bubenberg Vegi close to the main train station in Berne
(Bubenbergplatz 8). In Lucerne, vegetarians would choose the restaurant of
the Hotel Hofgarten (Stadthofstrasse 14) which serves inventive dishes
using organic produce exclusively. Combining vegetarian dining  with a
cultural or philosophical experience? It's possible at the Goetheanum in
Dormach near Basel where during a meal guests can also find out about the
teachings and life of Rudolf Steiner, founder of the anthroposophical
movement.

Strict agricultural laws and controls in Swiss veterinary medicine and
meat processing make it quite safe to bite into a good piece of meat in
Switzerland. However, the increasing demand for creative vegetarian dishes
has enticed many restaurants to offer  more extensive vegetarian
selections. For a detailed  listing of restaurants offering meatless
dishes, fresh produce and organic vegetables and fruit, look up
www.vegetaris.ch or www.vegetarismus.ch.

More tips about culinary adventures with or without meat are available

"Foodd and Wine" link in the SPECIAL FEATURES drop down box on the left.

7. The Harder Kulm above Interlaken - so easy to reach

The trip by tiny red funicular from Interlaken up to Harder Kulm is not
just recommended when time is too short for a more lengthy excursion. The
scenic summit offers some of the most spectacular views in the remarkable
Jungfrau Region. A bird's-eye view of Interlaken and the area nestling
between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. The two emerald green lakes, surrounded
by Alpine peaks. And the crowning glory - an uninterrupted view of the
awe-inspiring peaks of the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau.

The Harder has lost none of its magical attraction since composer Felix
Mendelssohn set the words of poet Eichendorff to music "O magnificent
forest, who planted you there, so high above?" Over 100 years ago,
Mendelssohn reached the summit by foot, through the same woods and along
the very same paths which are still in use today. Visitors can now take it
a lot easier and make the trip to the top by nostalgic funicular railway!

The elegant building at the top is now an excellent restaurant, with a
wonderful garden terrace. Seen from Interlaken, the building is often
mistaken for a chapel. The restaurant and two railway stations are of
historic interest as nostalgic period pieces, and undoubtedly add to the
captivating charm of the Harder Kulm Railway.
