We do not receive anything for this, other than the satisfaction that we have helped folks travel to a really lovely place for a very good price. Southport Landing Bed and Breakfast Inn is just one of those places that was an exceptional value, even before we asked for these discounted prices for you. It is small enough to be intimate and yet from its perch on the edge of Humboldt Bay it is as big as the life it has lead from its turn of the century beginnings. This early colonial revival mansion has seen much history as the rail and shipping port connecting the Eel River Basin with San Francisco. Each one of the Seven gorgeous bedrooms has been charmingly restored better than new, with a different view and theme. We stayed in the "Cottage" room that is also known as the Sunshine room for its beautiful use of yellows and view of the pasture land above.. This is a place that you might easily pay up to $200 a night. It is well worth that with its views, filled with great comfort, attention to detail and wonderful hospitality. But, you don't need to pay that much for getting away from it all! You don't even need to pay half of that. From the moment you arrive you are greeted by your host with complimentary beverage and hors d'oreuves. In the morning you are treated to a beautiful full country breakfast, made fresh from locally grown produce in the breakfast room completely outfitted with antiques. Everything about this historic landmark is authentic and well thought out. It is a real place to get away from it all, without paying outrageous prices. We talked to host Kate (Kathy) Major and she was happy to give us

Where
early 1900's grandeur meets country comfort and hospitality.
A blend of sea air and Redwood forests.......with old world charm. Being that we travel so much to Europe, Asia and Australia and New Zealand, I thought it would be fun to go on a road trip this Spring up the coast of California. I have been to San Francisco many times, but was completely unfamiliar with the Northern Coast. Just North of San Francisco we meandered through several Wine Counties having a great time, on our way to the North Coast, staying first at Mendicino. As much as we loved Mendicino, we found it a bit too pricey and really did have to spend between $150 and $200 a night to get a nice B and B, not to mention the cost of eating out. After thoroughly enjoying our stay in Mendicino, we headed North to Southport Landing, unaware that there was a whole different world waiting for us up there. We found it to be so open and unspoiled. The gentrification of the area has not yet begun. Besides finding that we had just missed "Jim Carey's" movie company in the nearby adorable Victorian Ferndale, the world seemed to melt away as we drove down Phelan Road that took us out along Homboldt Bay to Southport Landing. They are about halfway between Ferndale and Eureka. Recently, OUTSIDE magazine did an article on "10 Dream Towns", perfect places to "Live Big, Play Hard and Work (if you must)" Here is what they said about this part of Northern California: "A couple of years ago an economist cooked up a method of quantifying the unquantifiable: how attractive a place is. He created a scale that factored in climate, surface water, and variety of elevation - the hillier, the better - and fed stats into his program from every county in the Lower 48. When his computer burped out the results the winner had notched a perfect score of 21 for its topography: Humboldt County. Five hours north of San Francisco, this wonderland boasts 110 miles of lonely coastline, thousands of acres of ancient redwoods, several wild rivers, and 20 to 1 countywide ratio of acres to humans. And no one told the hard drive that Eureka ,(just up the road from Southport Landing) the county seat had thousands of redwood framed Victorians, or that it has a burgeoning art scene, where gallery-hoppers can stroll through the revived waterfront Old Town and a new art museum." Southport Landing Bed and Breakfast, overlooks Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge and is just a short hike to South Jetty Road, a road that goes along the Pacific coast beach that seems to go on forever. The Bed and Breakfast also boasts a third floor game room complete with pool table and table tennis, that use to function as the towns gathering place, back at the turn of the 20th century. Toast your tootsies next to the fireplace in the beautiful living room, after a day out hiking. Closest thing to walking through country hills and dales in England. "Upon entering this historic landmark one immediately feels it is something special. Every window looks out onto a beautiful view. Whether it's cattle grazing in the pasture, or the tides of the bay surging in and out, you are sure to find it calming to the soul."
